Mike Golden

Remember this guy? Mike Golden was one of our walk-ins the very first Record Store Day we hosted.  He said he wasn't so good, but would we mind if he played a few songs?  Naturally, he was awesome--he climbed on the stool with his guitar and played a few covers and one or two tunes of his own--and we loved it.  He contacted us this past Record Store Day and asked if he could play again, and of course we said yes.  He drew so many people into the store that you couldn't even move.  He's released an EP, and his first music video, and plays all over Chicago.  So here's to you, Mike--we're glad you've made it! <3

New Music XXII 1/2

Other Things I'm Enjoying This Week:

Badly Drawn Boy's Photographing Snowflakes
(Part 1 in his trilogy "It's What I'm Thinking")

Lovers' Darklight
(Gloriously melancholy Tegan-&-Sara-with-a-drum-machine Oregonian synth-pop.  I love you Carolyn Berk!  Call me?)

Hot Panda's How Come I'm Dead
(I can't even pin this one down--it's all over the place.  I hear Art Brut, the Lovely Feathers, Spinto Band, the Lupin soundtrack and who knows what else. I love the basslines, though, and I kinda sorta maybe wanna makeout with Chris Connelly)

Black Heart Procession's Blood Bunny/Black Rabbit
(Dismal, dark, depressing...with saws! I always dig the creepfest.  "Amore del Tropico" is still my favorite, though)

Also, those of you who still haven't listened to Janelle Monae need to get with it
(I love a woman in a tuxedo)

I am

The new Belle & Sebastian album Write About Love is glorious!  It's cheeky and happy and everything I've been missing since they took a break back in 2008, mod-pop and all.    It's ridiculous how happy this album makes me.

New Music XXXXII

Shelf Worthy This Week:

Apache Beat's Last Chants

Katie Costello's The City in Me EP

Clinic's Bubblegum

Let's see: dark, minimalist indie-pop; earnest avian chanteuseing; dreamy shoegaze; and, well, Clinic.  Life is good.

Shelf-Worthy Last Week (in case you missed it):
Ben Folds & Nick Hornby: Lonely Avenue
Neil Young: Le Noise
Deerhunter: Halcyon Digest

David says to tell you all that Deerhunter's latest is his favorite so far this year.
